When it comes to choosing a person to introduce you to a potential life partner, the decision obviously shouldn’t be a hasty one. Selecting the right matchmaker is crucial to getting the most out of your time and money, and, of course, your love life. But how do you find the perfect one to help you meet “the one?”
Just like when you’re in the market for a hair stylist, lawyer, or even a car, word-of-mouth referrals are the best place to start. Even if no one you know has used a matchmaker, there’s a good chance someone they know has. So spread the word that you’re looking, and hopefully someone will be able to point you in the right direction. Obviously the more people you can talk to, the more you’ll learn.
Even if you’ve gotten some great referrals, you should still research all of your options. “You should spend as much time researching a matchmaker’s reputation as you would for a doctor,” says dating coach and matchmaker Matt Titus.
One place to start is by contacting your city’s
Serious professional matchmakers often cater to a specific demographic. This may be delineated by any number of things such as age, religion, or geographic location. When you’re screening matchmakers, you should be looking to make sure you fall into their area of expertise, but they should also be screening you.
The matchmaking process is very intensive. Your matchmaker will meet and talk to you extensively about yourself and what you are looking for in a mate. They should offer advice on how to get the most out of the introductions they make for you. And after your dates, they should follow up with you so that if the introduction didn’t result in a match, they can use that information to better understand your preferences. Because a legitimate matchmaking process is so in depth, it does not come cheaply. You should expect to pay well into four or even five digits for the service
