When it comes to skin, glow is in. Summer’s makeup trends were all about achieving a dewy, glowy look, and luminous skin is a year-round beauty standard. The reason the look is so popular is simple: skin with a healthy glow looks younger.
But glowing skin isn’t every woman’s birthright. Thanks to genetics, the aging process and the environment, most of us have to struggle to achieve a mere glint. And it’s an effect that no amount of Botox or Restilin can achieve. So, what’s a wannabe glow-girl to do?
Fat Cell Killer
Enter Dr Shirley Madhere, a top Manhattan plastic surgeon with a specialty in a procedure called Mesotherapy. She’s even written a book about it. Mesotherapy originated in France and is most often associated with the cellulite fight or for weight loss. Basically, mesotherapy is a series of tiny injections into the skin’s middle layer. When used for weight loss or to smooth out cellulite, the injected ingredients are meant to burst fat cells. It turns out the same strategy, using a different combination of ingredients, also benefits facial skin.
When the procedure is used on the face it’s called “Mesolift.” But here in the states, Dr. Madhere has given it a different name. “I’m a surgeon, and the only lifting I know how to do is with a knife,” she says. So, I call it “Mesoglow” because of the amazing glow it gives the face.”
Vitamins for Your Mug
Here’s how it all glows down: the plastic surgeon injects a cocktail of vitamins and anti-oxidants all across the patients face with tiny needles. The needles stimulate pores to open and absorb the cocktail into the middle layer of the skin. After the injections, a vitamin concoction is left on the skin’s surface for several minutes. Then the doctor wipes off what doesn’t get absorbed and moisturizer is applied. Dr. Madhere says it’s a relatively painless procedure. “I’ve had patients fall asleep on me or say that it tickles,” she says.
The result is a healthy, radiant glow and younger looking, firmer, more toned skin, says Dr. Madhere. “People love it because there are almost no side effects, if any,” she adds. The cost of the procedure ranges anywhere from $650 to $1,100, and to achieve maximum results patients stop in for their Mesoglow injections once a week for three to five sessions with a maintenance touch up every three to six months.
You Glow, Girl
At this time, nearly all of Dr. Madhere’s patients are folks in the know. “I found out about it from a model who used to travel back and forth to Paris,” says Dr. Madhere. At this point, nearly all of her Mesoglow clients are actresses, television personalities, models or celebrities who have the treatments done for the red carpet, modeling sessions or other special events.
But as a buzz slowly begins to build around the procedure, beauty industry experts believe it will soon become as mainstream as Botox and Restylane.
