Ah, the movie date. So much opportunity for romance, but how do you choose the right film? You have to find something not too chick flick-y, and not too intense, and definitely nothing gross. You can take a gamble and try out a new movie in the theater, but why risk a clunker when there are so many great classic date movies? Everyone has their own favorite, but here are a few tried-and-true date movies that will leave you and your date ready to cuddle:
1. Casablanca. Possibly the best date movie of all time, this movie has great characters, an engaging plot, and legendary dialogue. Plus, it’s one of those movies that everyone “has” to see, so if either you or your date are guilty of missing it, you have a good excuse to watch something romantic.
2. When Harry Met Sally. “It’s so true!” Every guy and gal can relate to the on-the-mark observations about men and women and the relationships between them. It’s very funny, and not overly sappy, so it’s bound to satisfy all but the most cold-hearted types.
3. Titanic. It may be the most overtly romantic movie of all time, but that’s no reason to avoid it for fear of boring your man! “Titanic” avoids being sappy with plenty of action, bad guys, and interesting historical context. It’s a long film, so be sure to get plenty of snacks and other trips before you pop it into the DVD player.
4. Love, Actually. This is movie is most appropriate during a holiday-time date, but it’s enjoyable year-round as well. The short vignettes are bound to hold even the shortest attention spans, and how can you not succumb to the cuteness of the school pageant scene at the end?
5. Casino Royale. Or any Jame Bond movie, for that matter. Hot guys, beautiful babes, intrigue . . . what more could you ask for? Consider a James Bond marathon over the course of several nights to keep the party going.
6. Annie Hall. Even for non-Woody Allen fans, “Annie Hall” is a sweet, feel-good movie that gives you a million reasons to love Diane Keaton. Sure, it’s about analyzing a relationship after it’s over, but the performances by Allen and Keaton are so great you’ll want to take things to the next level with your date.
7. Top Gun. Tom Cruise’s erratic behavior these days may be anything but sexy, but as the hot “Maverick” in “Top Gun,” he is to die for. Oh, also there are jets. Your man will be singing “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” in no time!
8. Moonstruck. Cher and Nicholas Cage make an odd couple with fabulous chemistry in this movie for anyone who loves New York, Italians, and/or the opera. Cage is fabulous as a weird love interest with one hand, while Cher gives an Oscar-winning performance.
9. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. This is a great movie for more artsy types. The twisty-turvy plot is not for the faint of heart, but the incredible Charlie Kaufman screenplay under the miraculous direction of Michel Gondry is a sight to be seen. And the chemistry between Kate Winslet and Jim Carey is incredibly believable.
10. Raiders of the Lost Ark. Indiana Jones makes every guy want to don a hat and go fight some Nazis. Plus, there are real moments of tenderness in between the explosions and chase scenes. Also, Harrison Ford? HOT!
