1940's chic with a disco beat....

This is an East Village mainstay is popular with singles searching for some fun. Plus, if you have a taste for tradition and campy, chic fun, check it out. A place where not only the girls want to have fun!

354 Bowery between Great Jones & E. 4th Streets

Marion’s NYC

The History:

Marion Nagy arrived in New York City from her native Hungary just after World War II. Her dangerous and exciting journey began when she decided to flee Stalinist Budapest. With careful planning and a little luck, she craftily devised a daring escape to be carried out when she was competing in Paris as a member of the Hungarian Swim Team in the World Peace Games held after the war.

Because she spoke not a word of French, Marion realized that modeling was one of the few jobs she was qualified for in France. Under an assumed name, Marion quickly became one of couture’s most sought-after models. Eventually her fame became her nemesis, and no longer feeling safe in Europe, Marion boarded the Queen Elizabeth and sailed to New York City.

Marion resumed her modeling career in New York but soon realized that her true passion was bringing together groups of artists and literati for evening socials. Marion’s cocktail and canapés became as well known as the scintillating conversations. Seeing a new career opportunity, Marion joined forces with a talented expatriate French chef and Marion’s Continental Restaurant & Lounge was born in a little storefront in the middle of the exciting “downtown” scene.

Marion’s thrived for 23 years with the restaurant overflowing nightly with bohemian artists, stars of stage and screen, socialites, senators, and presidents (All were encouraged to autograph a dinner plate. It’s still a mystery as to where they are today but be sure to see our collection of recently signed plates!). Marion was in her element, greeting and seating, being the hostess of a never-ending party. On a chilly September evening in 1973, Marion gathered her friends and longtime regulars to the restaurant for what would prove to be the grand finale. After a lovely dinner of oysters Rockefeller and filet mignon au poivre, Marion rose from her seat, and tapped her champagne glass to quiet the room. She explained to the shocked crowd that after working for so long, she now wanted to devote more time to her three young children and that in order to do so, she would be closing the restaurant and moving full time to her summer home in Belmar, New Jersey. Marion ordered the party to continue and the guests soon toasted Marion’s new life ahead.

In 1990, Marion’s son acquired the space that had housed his mother’s restaurant. Working from old photographs, the dining room was faithfully restored to its original glory.

The City of Brotherly Love...is the place to look for love...1. 105 Social

With two floors and six different rooms, there is something for everyone at 105 Social. The downstairs has a classic bar feel with a 40-foot bar, plasma TV screens, large wooden booths, DJ booth and dance floor [for the ladies]. The second floor of this Manayunk hotspot offers a sports room [for the boys] with a pool table and a bar room for socializing and a VIP lounge for bottle service. It’s definitely the place to socialize. Bring the girls out on a Thursday night, enjoy the tunes and see what boys are there enjoying your moves!

2. Rittenhouse Square

Looking forward to the sun? Well, then pick out your place on the lawn in Rittenhouse Square as soon as the first day of warm weather hits! This is a excellent place to find the boys on a lazy Sunday afternoon [especially since football season is over!] Grab a book at the Barnes and Noble on the corner and head over to that ever elusive green space. Located at the corner of 18th and Walnut Streets, it’s a must do once you see the first sign of spring.

3. Boat House Row

Don’t underestimate the power of a Sunday morning power walk when it comes to meeting a man. Running is great for burning calories, but walking will allow him to catch up with you on Kelly Drive. Even in the cold winter months, you can see plenty of single guys along Boat House Row. It may have a tough, rough exterior, but that doesn’t stop nice guys from pumping iron or burning calories at Old City Ironworks. Best thing about it, you can get a birds eye of the whole place because cardio is located on the second floor overlooking the entire gym. During the summer months, be sure to wear something cute, as they open the garage doors at the front and you never know who may be walking by!

8. La Columbe

Like your latte foamy and served friendly? La Columbe in Manayunk is a great place to meet men on Saturday mornings. You can usually find them here taking a breather after biking up the Wall. 4360 Main Street, Philadelphia, PA.

D-C is the best place for boys, take a look...1. Social Safeway

Ladies, with your busy schedules we know it is very convenient to order your groceries on online; but why not spend that 45 minutes at the “Social Safeway” in Georgetown. The “Social Safeway”, as it is affectionately called by Washingtonians, is full of single well-groomed men all contemplating that crucial decision: Frosted Flakes or Fruit Loops!? Linger around the beef and poultry sections. Men in DC are always looking to find an excuse to have a barbeque and show off their grilling skills! Maybe you’ll get an invite. 30 St and K St N.W.

2. Mate Lounge

Pay a visit to Mate Lounge in Georgetown or try any one of Mauricio Fraga’s five lounges. The atmosphere is chic, but relaxing. Go during the week when it isn’t too packed and it is fairly easy to find a table. Scout out the scene before requesting a table. Their fabulous staff tries to accommodate your table preferences.

3. Café Milano

3251 Prospect Street NW

Dine among celebrities, politicians, and Washington’s own jet-setter elite. If you are looking for an older single man, this is the place to be. Take a seat at the bar with your girlfriends and within five minutes at least one George Clooney look a like will be offering you a drink.

4. Capital Alumni Network

Miss those college weekends playing football with the hotties on the quads? Look into joining the Capital Alumni Network. Every year CAN sponsors a Softball League and Tournament in Spring and Summer, Flag Football League and Tournament in Fall, and Basketball and Volleyball Leagues and Tournaments in Winter. The fun doesn’t end after the game. Most nights continue at the Bottom Line or The Exchange, both conveniently located near the National Mall. If throwing a football doesn’t interest you, get involved with their philanthropic activities which include a Bachelor/Bachelorette auction benefiting a local charity. A great way to meet fellow male alumni from your university and the other 220 universities in the network.

5. The Georgetown Waterfront

Located along the Potomac river in Georgetown, the waterfront restaurants and bars are a great place to find men cheering on their favorite sports teams on TV or to check out the shirtless hotties who dock their boats here for a few drinks. Remember to wear your cutest nautical outfit (it’s so in this year!) 30 St and K St N.W.

6. Ballroom Dance Company

You would be surprised how many single men take dance lessons, but pick the Latin dances over the waltz ladies. Salsa, meringue, rumba, cha-cha all very hot. Men are learning these moves to impress the ladies. Take a class with BDC. They have classes and dances all across the DC metropolitan area. The men here are very genuine, interested in you and not just your swiveling hips!

7. DC Improv

We know you hated how the Ex spent hours drinking beer and watching Comedy Central. But let’s face it, going to a comedy club is as close as a single man and his buddies get to a cultural event. Men flock to the DC Improv and in groups! Check it out with some girlfriends. No worries; there will be plenty of men to go around. 1140 Connecticut Ave., N.W.

8. Washington Sports Club

The best time to go is during lunch. There are many clubs in the city and they are conveniently located near downtown office buildings and residential areas. Lots of professionals try to squeeze in a quick workout during lunch and after work. And just think you get to see the goods before you get anywhere near the bedroom!

9. Rock Bottom Brewery & The Front Page

Venture out to Virginia after work. These two Arlington bars have fabulous happy hour specials on Wednesday nights. Every DC and northern Virginia professional lines up to take advantage of these deals. Definitely not a place to skip. Plenty of well dressed men in business (DC’s finance and political types) and business causal (DC’s tech and communications types) so take your pick ladies! Suit or khakis? (4238 Wilson Boulevard Arlington, VA) (4201 Wilson Boulevard Arlington, VA)

10. K Street Lounge

So you and the girls want to go out dancing. Check out K Street Lounge. Weekends here are packed with people looking to have a good time. Good music and beautiful people bring back the crowd and I hear there is a new Ladies Night on Saturday. Get on the guest list to avoid cover and lines. 1301 K Street, NW

Heading to Chicago for the weekend...now you'll know where to go!1. Webster’s Wine Bar

If you are steadfast for Chardonnay, or if Chianti is your staple but you feel the nightlife doesn’t cut it, then Webster’s Wine Bar offers the relief you seek. Every month Webster’s chooses a feature wine, and tastings are organized accordingly. A few small tables create an intimate atmosphere for discussions. In the backroom or “library” old bookshelves line the walls and red velvet sofas give the room a burgundy study feel. The top floor is a larger room complete with fireplace. This room is generally booked weeknights for private functions, Monday nights usually feature live music, usually of the jazz genre. While the weeknight crowds tend to be mellow, the music is a far cry from quiet jazz. It’s more of a funky mix, with acid jazz overtones. 1480 W. Webster

2. Primehouse

Hotel dining brought sexy back in ‘06. Hip luxury, like that at the James Hotel’s new restaurant, David Burke’s Primehouse, replaced the button-down bore of yesteryear. Get your sexy on. Architect Deborah Berke has done a complete overhaul in the spacious dining room, featuring warm, rich tones of cumin and cinnamon. Unique design elements include ingrained wood flooring stained brown-blue, ‘’mother-of-pearl’’ plastered walls and blackened nickel chandeliers adorning the ceiling. Guests may settle into chocolate leather upholstered chairs complemented by red ‘’leather” upholstered tabletops.
